Purpose Statement
The job of Computer Technician was established for the purpose/s of installing and maintaining application and telecommunication hardware and software and network sub-systems to meet the technology needs of the school system; providing technical support to site administrators and resolving school system or school site operational issues.

JOB DESCRIPTION
COMPUTER TECHNICIAN

Essential Functions
Assesses malfunctions of hardware and/or software applications (server or local machine resident) for the purpose of determining appropriate actions to maintain computer and/or network operations.
Develops user guides for routine trouble shooting and maintenance of computers throughout the school system for the purpose of controlling expenses related to the maintenance of computer equipment within the school system.
Inspects computer and network equipment requiring specialized computer repair and trouble shooting skills for the purpose of identifying and verifying repair needs.
Installs software products on a variety of hardware platforms for the purpose of upgrading and improving school system computers, computer labs, and networks.
Maintains computer and telephone system security and profiles for the purpose of regulating access to inter- and intranets, voice mail and student information system.
Maintains District databases for the purpose of ensuring efficient transfer of data between applications.
Monitors school system servers, website, and related hardware and supporting software for the purpose of ensuring that resources and technology are available and utilized effectively.
Orders equipment supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently.
Prepares written materials (e.g. procedures, instructions, memos, letters, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
Repairs computers, peripherals, network equipment and software for the purpose of maintaining computers and computer network equipment in a safe and functional operating condition.
Trains school system and site staff on software applications for the purpose of ensuring their ability to use new and/or existing software and hardware.
Transports a variety of items (e.g. equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of providing materials at job site or transporting equipment for repair.

Other Functions
• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
• Primary responsibility for consumer and technical education (CTE) for the purpose of maintaining software and hardware.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with persons of varied technology expertise; operating current generation computer and telephone equipment; operating standard office equipment including utilizing pertinent software applications; and planning and managing projects.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: personnel computers and peripheral equipment including network technologies; Internet and educational software applications; VOIP telephone systems and installation procedures.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating technical information to non-technical audiences; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; and developing effective working relationships.

Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
